Although it was produced in France, Je vous souhaite la pluie premiered at the Ronda International Film Festival in Spain. The film was shown at the festival circuit again in 2012 at Étoiles Francophones where Sissako himself was a sponsor of the festival.
Abderrahmane Sissako's Je vous souhaite la pluie is a socially and environmentally conscious made-for-television short. The film centres on an unnamed woman clutching her baby in a deserted in an unnamed patch of rural Africa. Sitting under the shadow of a single scanty tree, she makes unfruitful attempts to quench her baby's thirst. She looks up into the sky over and over again hoping for rain fall. As a single drop of water is impossibly cherished for many around the world, the film alerts viewers to troubling statistics such as there are 894 million people world-wide without access to safe drinking water and 4,500 children die per day as a result of polluted water.
