Synopsis
This film looks at two generations of women living on the island of Djerba, where the men return from trading for only one month of the year. Aicha, in opposition to tradition, joins her husband Said in Tunis under the condition that she provide him a son after having two daughters. However, the son she births, Aziz, turns out to be autistic and their marriage falls apart under the strain. Returning to Said’s family home, Aicha struggles with her controlling mother-in-law, the frustration and loneliness of Djerba, and her memories of her earlier entrapment there. Following Aicha and her children through both moves, The Season of Men examines the oppression these women face in both environments as they navigate opposing traditional and modern values.
